Candide
A moment, caught as if it had never been arranged. Nine frames across one day and one night, and in none of them does anybody look at the lens.

The direction.
( WRITTEN FIRST )Ambient, never sculpted. One large soft source with a reason to be there: a sheer curtain over mid-morning sun, a string of bulbs along a wall, the warm bounce off a pale floor. The brightest point is almost always the source itself, never the face.
Nobody looks at it, in any frame. The action is already underway when the shutter goes, and the photographer stands a few metres back and is never acknowledged. The whole registre rests on that one fiction, held from end to end.
Three elements of context and no more: a bed with the dress bag laid on it, a table with a glass and a folded card, a window. Past three the image becomes a shop window and loses its plausibility. Everything else goes soft.
Chest height, or the eye level of someone seated. 35 mm for space, 85 mm for intimacy. This is the only family where a neutral camera is allowed, because the gaze of a discreet witness is a neutral gaze.
Astia for daylight, Eterna for night. Lifted blacks, muted saturation, a fine grain you feel more than you see. Skin keeps its pores and a little shine late in the evening.
